Introducing Eddie Hicks Canadian National Mogul Team Member

Eddie Hicks Canadian National Mogul Team Member

By making innovative products for Alpine sports we are lucky enough to rub elbows with some elite athletes. Enter our pal Eddie Hicks. He's a member of the Canadian National Mogul Team currently based out of Whistler, BC competing in the world cup circuit. He's a good Canadian kid grew up playing hockey and a variety of sports until he discovered freestyle skiing.

From that time on he was singularly focused on training and competing in moguls, duals moguls, half pipe, and big air events. A quadruple medalist at the age of 13 in all four junior national championship events, he eventually went on to specialize in moguls. However, at the age of 17 he stopped and focused to focus on school and academics. After highschool graduation unsure what post-secondary route to choose, Eddie decided he was not finished with skiing and moved to Whistler full time where newly appointed BC team coach Adrian Taggart approached him to reconsider his mogul career. A few phone calls later, Eddie was thrown into his first full Noram season after little training in the previous 2 years and was invited to the selection camp for the National team at the end of the season. Eddie committed himself to pursuing his long-time dream of becoming a World Cup mogul skier and one year later was the top draft pick at the age of 19.

Now Eddie is part of the World Cup tour representing his team and nation proudly wherever he goes.

Christina our marketing coordinator, being a former mogul skiier and having numerous connections to current and former ski athletes introduced Eddie to the rest of us at Recon Instruments during our famous "Friday social gatherings". Needless to say Eddie was pretty stoked to try out our technology and use it to enhance his training regiment. In his latest training update he gives us an athletes's perspective of the fitness testing process. We're lucky to be able to get an elite athlete's perspective of the world cup circuit, and everything that goes on behind the scenes. Luckily training camp at Apex Mountain amounted to the best conditions ever in the last 6 years. He had this to say about the MOD Live experience:

"I got the opportunity to try out the Recon Instruments “MOD” and “MODLive” devices in my short time there.

After training I came home and using the HQ software I could upload my day and see how fast I was hitting the jump, how many times I hit it (it’s not as easy as you think to keep track) and a wealth of other valuable information – the amount of things this little device can do is unbelievable.

What really excites me is the prospect of trying out this technology on a real World Cup course and being able to review my data after a day of such training. Myself and the others who will be starting the year on the World Cup circuit enjoyed an abbreviated camp in Apex due to the fact that we will find ourselves in Finland again shortly to train before the first World Cup of the season which takes place on December 12th in Ruka."

Stay tuned for more updates from Eddie this season and wish him good luck this year on the cup circuit by liking his Facebook Page and following him on Twitter! What kinds of things do you want to know about being a Pro skiier? Leave your questions in the comments below.
