Job Posting: Public Relations Specialist

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop close and communicative relationship with product marketing
  • Develop solid relationships with designers and tech team to have an open communication channel to obtain product information and to deliver press feedback
  • Partner with marketing manager to produce consistent messaging and ensure that timing of activities are in sync.
  • Attend planning meetings and event/project updates.
  • Be an expert of Recon Instruments and industry products and technologies across categories.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive network of mass media, broadcast, online and print contacts.
  • Serve as spokesperson; assist all media inquiries through timely research and presentation of necessary information.
  • Research, write and edit press releases, alerts, fact sheets, video packages and speaking points. Develop messaging per product and review with management and marketing members.
  • Monitor and maintain internal digital and online content, including social networking identity
  • Understand news and industry trends to aid in the creation of electronic press kits.
  • Plan and coordinate production/marketing press tours both in-house and on the road
  • Direct special events, oversee event management by servicing media on-site at tradeshows, awards galas, photo shoots, interviews and press conferences.
  • Prepare follow-up communications when needed, including product materials, error reports, impression reports, etc
  • Counsel government, association, university officials with regard to publicity and informational programs.
  • Arrange and conduct programs to keep up contact between organization representatives and the public
  • Provide post-mortem analysis of all PR activities as needed.                      
  • Represent Recon Instruments at community, social, and charity projects;
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Travel the world; ski, snowboard, snowmobile, bike, DH, ATV, run, race, surf, swim, SCUBA, sail, row, kiteboard, BASE jump, skydive, paintball as needed


Experience Required:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related discipline and/or 4-6 years directly related experience
  • Experience working in communications or PR related position at a proven company in the action/adventure sports industry
  • Experience in promoting consumer goods
  • Experience in coordinating/managing events at major industry shows, shoots, and conferences

Most public relations workers have a college degree in journalism, communications, or public relations. A good liberal arts background with some experience in journalism is desirable. College courses in business administration, psychology, public speaking, and public relations are all helpful.

  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Very strong writing skills and the ability to articulate concepts, messages and strategies
  • Extensive experience drafting messaging documents, talking points and Q&As
  • Excellent ability to stay cool under pressure, navigate calmly through change and roll with the punches
  • Demonstrates a passion for the industry, its players and trends
  • Ability to work on a small team that interacts with many different internal clients
  • Thrives in team-oriented culture and knows how to have fun while working hard
  • Knowledge of Graphic Design programs (PSD, PNG, AI, EPS, etc)
  • You must be an adept writer and excellent verbal communicator--shy people need not apply...
