Vancouver, BC – June 11, 2015 – Recon Instruments, the award-winning technology company behind the world’s first smart eyewear designed for sports, is pleased to announce a partnership with professional triathlete and IRONMAN® champion Andrew Starykowicz. Starykowicz and Recon began collaborating on Jet’s design and functionality in March 2014, and their relationship has been integral to Jet’s success.
Starykowicz originally approached Recon with an invitation to the VELO Sports Center velodrome in Carson, California, an aero testing facility and U.S. Olympic Training Site. As a meticulous athlete with a background in mechanical engineering, Starykowicz immediately recognized how, by delivering critical metrics direct-to-eye inside an aerodynamic eyewear frame, Jet could help him and other high-performance athletes elevate their precision and efficiency during training. Jet’s development cycle included extensive testing by Starykowicz, who integrated the product into his rigorous training schedule and provided Recon with invaluable feedback.
“Securing the best input from extremely demanding professional athletes was essential to Jet’s development,” said Tom Fowler, Chief Marketing Officer at Recon Instruments. “When Andrew invited Recon to join him for aero testing, I jumped at the chance. Starky’s exceptional technical aptitude and killer training schedule made him a perfect partner.”
“Recon Jet is a revolutionary product that’s changing the way athletes obtain data,” said Starykowicz. “It delivers a level of convenience and immediacy that’s simply not possible with smartwatches and bike computers. Having key metrics like cadence and heart rate just below my right eye allows me to stay in the right training zones during structured sessions, and it allows me make adjustments on the fly without breaking my concentration.”
Having helped Recon refine Jet as a training tool for endurance athletes, Starykowicz will continue using the product as part of his own training. Thanks to Engage, Recon’s powerful online fitness tracking service, anyone can follow and analyze Starykowicz’s training activities in detail. His public profile is accessible on the Engage website and the Engage mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Jet combines a smartphone-class microcomputer with a display located just below the user’s right eye. Its built-in sensor suite and support for third-party ANT+™ and Bluetooth Smart sensors enables users to track metrics like heart rate, speed, pace, distance, and elevation gain. Power meter connectivity is coming later this month, as well. Additionally, Jet is equipped with a point-of-view photo and video camera, and it allows the user view caller ID and text message notifications instantly from a paired smartphone.
